The 2017-18 girls basketball season is off and running. Coach Bryan White is definitely expecting great things from this team. "I feel like the conference title is up for grabs and I want us to be the ones to go out and grab it!!" On paper…Boone is probably the team to beat, with their top three players back and coming off a state tournament appearance, but White feels like his team can compete with anybody. "We have a lot of girls that got some great experience last year and are looking to build off of last year's 18-5 record."
The varsity team is off to a 2-2 start. The team split games at the Newton Tournament with a seven-point loss to North Polk and a nine-point win over Chariton. The team then dropped a tough, last second, 2-point game to DC-G. The girls were finally able to play at HOME last Friday night and handled Bondurant-Farrar, 70-41. The girls ended the game on a 31-6 run, which was nice to see for all of the Wildcat fans.
The freshmen team has only played once and lost to DC-G. The girls played a much better second half and have continued to work hard in practice and make each other better. They have a new coach this year in Jess Lehms and she will continue to work with them on being their best and being great teammates. Their next game will be Dec. 8 at Perry.
The JV team is off to a great 2-0 start. Coach Nick Nelson has his team doing some great things. Freshman Aubrey Furnal really had a hot shooting night at DC-G to start the season on a good note and many girls played well in their home victory against Bondurant-Farrar. Their next game is also at Perry Friday, Dec. 8.
Coach White and his staff would like to thank all of the Wildcat fans who have been out already to support the girls and would encourage everyone to come out and catch a game. The mega nights are going to be a lot of fun for everyone. You can catch all six teams (three girls & three boys) in action at Perry on Friday night. The JV girls and boys start at 4:30, The varsity girls and freshmen boys at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys and freshmen girls at 7:30 p.m.
